Event 04 Champion Kyle Cartwright

Congratulations to Kyle Cartwright who has defeated 2,223 other players over three days to capture the first place prize of $360,435 and his first WSOP Gold Bracelet.

Twelve players returned to start Day 3 and the first two would fall in the first half hour of play.

First to go was Blake Barousse when his {q-Spades}{q-Diamonds} was bested by the {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades} of Robert Kuhn. All the chips went in preflop and the {7-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{3-Spades} board sent him packing. Very soon after that a short stacked Geoffrey Mooney shoved from the small blind with {10-Hearts}{9-Spades} but walked into the {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs} of Kyle Cartwright in the big blind and Mooney was out in 11th.

That meant we had the unofficial final table of 10 and as soon as the dogs and Frisbees show was finished they moved over to the feature table to re-join battle. On the very first hand Steve Chanthabouasy agonized over a river shove from Cartwright on a board of {k-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{5-Clubs} and when he made the call with {k-Spades}{q-Diamonds} he saw the bad news as Cartwright had flopped a set with his {9-Hearts}{9-Spades}.

The official table of nine was underway and before the end of the next level Michael Sortino would fall in 9th place when Ylon Schwartzs {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds} out flopped his {9-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}. Ken Weinstein exited in 10th when his short stack shove with {8-Diamonds}{7-Spades} was looked up by the {a-Spades}{9-Spades} of Jeremy Dresch.

Robert Kuhn had made a great run through the field to make the final table but he was eliminated in 7th place when he shoved with {a-Spades}{10-Diamonds} on the turn of a board reading {7-Spades}{2-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}. Unfortunately for him, Kyle Cartwright (again!) was his opponent had a legitimate {9-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} top two pair hand and the river was the inconsequential {8-Hearts}.

Jeremy Dresch was next to go and it was Cartwright, who was making a habit of knocking players out, who would be his executioner. Cartwright six-bet shoved with {q-Spades}{q-Hearts} and Dresch called it off with {a-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}. No help for Dresch on a board of {5-Hearts}{8-Spades}{2-Spades}{5-Clubs}{2-Clubs} and he was out in 6th with $61,068 for his troubles.

On to level 24 and 4th place finisher Matthew O'Donnell who was getting short on chips and moved all in with {a-Clubs}{7-Spades}. Ylon Schwartz looked him up with {k-Hearts}{10-Spades} and flopped him practically dead on a final board of {q-Clubs}{j-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{q-Spades}{j-Spades}.

The story of quite a long session of three handed play was Pasters refusal to give up and a series of double ups where he got it in with the worst hand but came up smelling of roses each time. On level four, when they were four handed, he got it in with {a-Hearts}{10-Spades} and was at risk against the {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs} of Dizenzo but a straight on the {7-Spades}{6-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{3-Hearts} board saved him. He then doubled up minutes later with {k-Hearts}{j-Spades} against the {10-Spades}{10-Diamonds} of Cartwright when the board ran out {8-Clubs}{k-Spades}{4-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}. He then slipped back a fair bit before getting it all in with {a-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} against Cartwright again, and again the dealer came to the rescue, this time on the river as the cards fell {7-Spades}{k-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{6-Spades}. It looked for a long time that it would come down to a battle between Cartwright and Schwartz, but it was not to be.

It finally got to heads up play when Paster raised to 100,000, Cartwright three-bet to 260,000 and Schwartz shoved from the big blind for 2,025,000. Paster folded and Cartwright gave it a great deal of thought before making the call. His call turned out to be inspired as his {9-Diamonds}{9-Spades} was in great shape against the {4-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} of Schwartz. The board ran out {8-Hearts}{2-Spades}{2-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}{a-Diamonds} and Schwartz was gone in 3rd place for $157,926.

A quick dinner break was then declared and they came back to play with Cartwright holding the lead with 4,605,000 against the 2,025,000 of Paster. Indeed it didnt take long after resumption of play for a winner to be decided.

Paster raised to 100,000 from the button and Kyle Cartwright three-bet to 270,000. Paster four-bet shoved for 1,845,000 and Cartwright quickly made the call.

Cartwright {a-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}

Paster {4-Clubs}{4-Spades}

Both players stood up and had their eyes glued to the felt as the dealer put out the cards that would decide if the matter was settled there and then.

{5-Spades}{q-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{j-Spades}{q-Clubs}

Cartwright threw his arms in the air in jubilation and rushed over to his supporters before shaking hands and receiving the congratulations of his opponent.

Hand #155

Jason Paster raised to 100,000 and Kyle Cartwright three-bet to 270,000. Paster four-bet all in for 1,845,000 and Cartwright quickly made the call.

Paster was at risk and turned over the {4-Clubs}{4-Spades}, while Cartwright tabled {a-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}. The players stood and awaited the flop which fell {5-Spades}{q-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} and Cartwright vaulted into the lead.

Cartwrights rail yelled and now he had to anxiously fade a four or two runners. The turn was the {j-Spades} and the river must have seemed to take forever for Cartwright and Paster, but eventually came the {q-Clubs}.

Paster is out in second place and Cartwright wins the title and the bracelet.

Hand #146

Jason Paster raised to 100,000 from the button, Cartwright reraised to 260,000 from the small blind and Schwartz pushed all in from the big blind for 2,025,000.

Paster got out of the way and Cartwright thought for a moment before eventually making the call with {9-Diamonds}{9-Spades}. We could see the disappointment on Schwartzs face as he rolled over {4-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}.

Schwartz was the player at risk and needed help in a big way. The flop came down {8-Hearts}{2-Spades}{2-Clubs} and the {j-Diamonds} on the turn was no help for him either. The {a-Diamonds} completed the board and Schwartz was gone in third place.

Paster and Cartwright will now play heads up for the bracelet.
